Cherry Hill East Summer Reading Assignments
& Recommended Course Review Materials

Dear Parents and Students of the Cherry Hill Community:

Within the last several years, we have examined our practices regarding summer assignments. As a result of our reflective practices, it is clear that summer assignments have great value; it is also clear that the proliferation of summer assignments, within and amongst departments, has caused us to reexamine the practice of summer assignments and the manner in which we are using them. Since September, 2002, we have spoken with parents, students, and staff about this very issue. For the summer of 2013, we will continue to follow this established practice.

For the summer of 2013, only in English, at all levels, will there be a required summer reading; in all other departments, the summer reading and review packets will be optional or recommended. All summer assignments will be posted on our high school web sites. For the required English assignments, students will be given a directed reading, and they will be asked to complete a writing assignment in class within the first two weeks of school. In all other areas, departments may run information sessions to review the optional packets. These packets will be a resource for students; in problem sets in the sciences and mathematics, problems and solutions will be provided in the review packets, as well as the appropriate resources.

Summer holidays are meant for enrichment, renewal, and family. Summer reading and review work is appropriate, and we encourage such work. We will continue to provide optional review activities; we will continue to have high expectations of our students throughout the year.

Sincerely,

John O'Breza, Principal, Cherry Hill East
Joseph N. Meloche, Principal, Cherry Hill West

Please note that summer assignment information is subject to change through the last day of school.
